Insight on Types of CDO’s and the influence they have on Data adoption

We are privileged to have spent time advising on, assessing and delivering Data capabilities across complex organisations such as Banks and resultantly worked with many Chief Data Officers (CDOs). From this wealth of experience, we have observed two distinct categories of CDOs to have emerged over the years.

Firstly, the Protective CDO. This variety of CDO leans towards the cautious side, believing that the optimal way to govern is by restricting access. Their modus operandi is a "deny unless very justified" approach, necessitating substantial validation and bureaucratic navigation for any further engagement with data. Although these individuals are highly experienced, diligent, and have a sincere commitment to their roles, their tendency towards risk-aversion leads them to focus primarily on compliance. A pitfall of this approach is that these organisations often struggle with innovation due to data apprehension. Interestingly, in these firms, I've frequently observed an abundance of "grey" and concealed data due to employees seeking ways around the restrictions.

Secondly, the Progressive CDO. These are the visionaries located on the right of the data value chain, who believe that active engagement with data represents true business value. They champion data utilisation and adoption, measuring success not in terms of control or quantity of data, but by its practical application and business impact. The most successful of these individuals are also well-versed in data governance, which enables them to effectively alter their colleagues' perceptions. These CDOs are motivated by the potential of business benefits and value that can be achieved through data, and their enthusiasm for data is infectious.

For those working in data-centric roles within the complex sectors such as financial; services, the value of the Progressive CDO should be recognized. While working under such leadership may present its challenges, the rewards of embracing a "we can" mindset significantly outweigh the limitations imposed by a "we can't" approach.
